Tatiana Koch Artist Biography

Plein Air Painting

Tatiana Koch’s work combines her passion for nature, and the simple love of applying paint. Growing up in Denver CO, her Mother created an atmosphere of creativity.  She nurtured her daughter’s talent and interest in art,  and Tatiana painted her first oil piece at age six.  When she was five the family took a trip to Germany to visit her Father’s family.  This provided a base of inspiration and curiosity for art and architecture which influenced her art later in life.  An avid skier and hiker, her Father instilled an early sense of awe and respect for nature.  Before high school she enrolled in a watercolor class, and painted with this medium for years, till she moved to Michigan and began painting with oils in college.

After completing a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting and Ceramics in 1999, she then enrolled in the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.  Here she learned a rigorous approach to figure drawing, using the sight - size technique.  During the summer there she took a plein air course, and discovered this to be her true passion.  When she returned to the States in 2003, she landed in Santa Fe.  During Tatiana’s ten years in Santa Fe she was represented by various galleries, then exhibited her work with the Santa Fe Society of Artists.

Tatiana’s inspiration for landscapes drove her farther and farther north from Santa Fe, so in 2013 she moved to Taos.  She and her  partner opened the  Koch Schultz Fine Art Gallery in Arroyo Seco. Co-owning and operating a gallery was a wonderful learning experience, and she developed many notable collectors.

Since moving to the Taos area, her painting has evolved to be a mix of mostly plein air work as well as larger studio pieces.  She strives to bring the freshness of painting on location to her studio pieces, and doing so requires a lot of time outdoors.   Plein-air painting brings many challenges such as rapidly changing light, wind, bugs, heat, cold, or being near busy roads or in very remote locations.  Also meeting various people, who bring a rich history of stories and new awareness to the surroundings.  Tatiana thrives to merge in a visual and inner dialog with the landscape, the season and the particular light of a string of moments.  She hopes to capture an accurate rendering of a place, while evoking her emotional response during the process of painting.

Tatiana’s paintings are found in private collections in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, California, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Michigan, Indiana, South Africa, and Canada.

Tatiana currently exhibits her work on Reed Street  in Taos, NM.

She lives in Taos, NM with her twin boys Aiden and Leo.
